Ewald "Wally" Nielsen, age 79, of Dassel, died Friday, July 25, 2008, at the Meeker County Memorial Hospital in Litchfield.
A memorial service will take place Friday, Aug. 8 at 1:30 p.m. at the Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Dassel. The Rev. Steven Olson will officiate at the service, with the interment of the urn at the Steelsville Cemetery in Dassel.
Ewald "Wally" Nielsen, the son of Hakon Conrad and Martha Krishna (Anderson) Nielsen, was born Sept. 24, 1928, in Minneapolis. He grew up in the Minneapolis area, where he graduated from high school.
Wally was united in marriage to Leatrice Hoover in 1946, in Minneapolis. The couple made their home in Minneapolis and Bloomington, before moving to Dassel in 1974.
Wally worked as a meat cutter in Minneapolis for many years. He later cut meat at his home for a few years. He had recently been working at White Front in Cokato three times a week.
Wally enjoyed bicycling, walking, and running. He had run the Grandma's and the Twin Cities marathons numerous times, having completed the Twin Cities Marathon for the last time in 2001. He also participated in numerous local 10k runs, and only missed one time running the Red Rooster Run.
Wally loved the times that his family and friends would get together. He was fluent in Swedish, and enjoyed talking with those in the area that still could talk Swedish. He kept in contact with his relatives that remained in Sweden, and traveled there to visit several times.
Wally is survived by his wife, Leatrice; children, Linda (Robert) Sathre of Two Harbors, Bertil (Tammy) Nielsen of Delano, (Janet) Nielsen of Clayton, Calif., and Judy Nielsen and husband (William Smith) of St. Paul; five grandchildren, Jon Sathre, Autumn Gustafson, Sadie Nielsen, Elena Nielsen, and Andrew Nielsen; and one great-granddaughter, Lilix Gustafson.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Bertil Nielsen.
