Obituary – Frank Johan Peterson 1844-1913

The death of Frank Peterson, residing two miles south of this village occurred very suddenly last Wednesday morning between 11 and 12 o’clock. Deceased had not been feeling well for a week but nothing serious was apprehended. Death came without warning, Mr. Peterson falling to the floor and expiring instantly. He was about 69 years of age and came to this country in 1864. After a four-year residence in Duluth, he removed to a farm in Collinwood and resided there for 35 years until his death. He leaves an aged widow, a son and daughter, J. S. Peterson of Atwater and Mrs. Frank McMillan of St. Paul, also two sisters, Mrs. Louisa Bergquist and Mrs. Tina Nyberg, both living south of this village. The funeral was held Friday afternoon from the family home, Rev. J. V. Soderman officiating. Interment was made in the Steelesville Cemetery.

The name of Frans (Frantz, Frank) has been seen as Frank G in many censuses, and even on his tombstone, but in the Swedish records his name is clearly Frans Jöhan. In the First Luth Gethsemane entry (p322 of 506) “J.F.” is crossed out and Frans Johan is written in its place.

Notes from Jim Holmgren:
Frans Johan might have gone to Nottebäck to be married. The marriage records would confirm this, but he didn't stay there because Carolina came to Elmedahl in 1865, the same year of their marriage, and the baby was born one year later. The marriage date is May 6, 1865 and Carolina came to Elmedahl June 28, 1865

(from First Luth Gethsemane records p. 150-151 of 506, and an entry on p. 322 of 506 in the family listing)
In the Gethsemane Church Records from 1885, Frans (age 41) was excommunicated (aka, dismissed) for drunkenness. Noted in the Deacons Minutes, despite admonishments from the pastor, members and friends, the behavior continued, thus this action was taken 11 Sep 1885. About 3 years later, Carolina was dropped from the rolls. However, the church performed both of their funerals. According to Jim Holmgren, the Augustana Synod routinely excommunicated members for drunkenness. In the day, those who drank didn’t go to church, and those who went to church didn’t drink. Other behaviors, such as an out-of-wedlock pregnancy, would also result in excommunication.
