Citizen Answers Final Call on Christmas Day
The community was called upon this week to mourn the death of one of its best known and most beloved citizens. Gust Bergquist answered the final summons on Christmas Day at the age of nearly eighty three years. Death resulted from a cancer of the stomach which had troubled him for the past year. He was confined to his bed for the past few weeks and met the call with the true courage of a good citizen and soldier.
Deceased was born in Sweden and spent his youth in that country. He was married in 1860 and shortly after came to this country and making his home at Duluth where he was employed in the saw mills until his removal to Collinwood about forty years ago where he settled on a farm and built up a home for his family.
Seven children survive him besides his aged wife. They are as follows: Axel, John S., Frans, Walter, Carl, August and Mrs. Bryan Owsley of Seattle, Wash. All of the children were at home with the exception of the last named. The funeral took place Monday from the Lutheran church in this village and the interment was made in the Steelesville cemetery. Rev. J. V. Soderman officiated at the last sad rites. The deceased was one of the oldest settlers of this community and was known and loved by a host of friends that had been associated with him in the settling up and development of the country. The Anchor sincerely joins in extending sympathy to the bereaved family.
