Oscar Peterson Called to Rest

Steelesville Pioneer Succumbs Friday, Services Held Monday P. M.

Death called another of the pioneer residents of this community when Oscar Peterson of Steelesville passed quietly away last Friday evening after reaching the advanced age of 72 years, seven months and 16 days. He was overcome by heat a number of years ago and had been obliged to stay close to the house since that time. About two months ago he suffered a stroke, from which he never rallied, his death coming from this and his advanced age.

The deceased was born in the Parish of Åsheda, Kronobergs län, Sweden, on the 20th of November, 1855. He was duly baptized and confirmed in Sweden. In company with his parents he came to this country in 1872, settling at Duluth where they remained for three years. The family came to Dassel in 1878 and Mr. Peterson had lived here since that time.

He was married in 1881 to Miss Matilda Boo to which union were born two sons, Albert and Carl. Mrs. Peterson passed away in 1885 and in 1886 he was married to Miss Marie Boo. Two sons, Joe and Herman, and two daughters, Alphild and Sigrid, were born to this union. Mr. Peterson affiliated with the First Lutheran church of Dassel in 1876 and was a member for nearly 52 years, serving on the church board for several years.

Mr. Peterson did much for the county in which he lived, being school clerk for 28 years and served as township supervisor for several years. He was identified with every movement for the betterment of this community. He was a great reader and writer, having written a number of poems that were printed in the Swedish newspapers of this country.

The funeral services were held Monday afternoon from the home and later from the Lutheran church. Reverend G. P. Williams officiated and was assisted by Reverend C. O. Bergquist of Cannon Falls who is a nephew of the deceased. Special music was furnished by the choir and a solo was sung by Clarence Johnson.
